At Folly and Nonsense, we are passionate about ethically-sourced fabrics and yarns. We do all we can to ensure that the fabrics and notions used to make our products come from companies that care about the labor conditions of their workers and do not work with sweatshops. Sometimes this means we cannot offer certain colors of fabrics or prints we might like, but we feel the trade off is worth it. The only labor exploited in creating our cases and bags is our own!
There are some wonderful yarn companies out there that share these values. Do your research, ask questions, and let us know when you find one that isn’t listed here! Letting companies know that we care about labor conditions around the world is the best way to use our power as consumers to make positive changes in developing countries.
O Wool – environmentally-friendly yarns spun and dyed in the USA
Fyberspates – the makers of Scrumptious yarns and other beautiful hand-dyed yarns, all of which are carefully sourced from mills with good labor standards.
Solitude Wool – breed specific yarns and rovings from Mid-Atlantic farms. All the fleeces are hand selected resulting in some truly spectacular yarns. Their rovings are some of the nicest I have ever spun.
The International Labor Rights Forum has a wealth of information about other companies who care and ways you can help.
Shopping for Clean Clothes – some great information on how to shop for “clean” clothes from the Clean Clothes Campaign. While you are there, be sure to read the rest of their FAQ’s, they have a lot of great information how you can do more to make a difference in workers lives!
